Mauricio Cardenas Gonzalez

Economist

Mauricio joined the IIF in 2023 as an Associate Economist in the Global Policy Initiatives Department. He is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Principles for Stable Capital Flows and Fair Debt Restructuring and conducting research on Sovereign Debt Policy and Sustainable Finance. His primary interest focuses on sovereign debt relief, international macroeconomics, financial crises, and emerging markets.

Previously, Mauricio served as an Analyst on public policy areas for The Economist Group, where he conducted research on different topics, including global risks, technology and infrastructure.

He has previously worked at the Center for Global Development and the IDB. Mauricio has also supported research programs for the U.S. Department of State and worked as a civil servant for the National Department of Planning of the Government of Colombia.

Education

Mauricio holds a Master's in International Monetary Theory and Policy and Development Economics from the Fletcher School, Tufts University, and a postgraduate certificate in quantitative methods for applied economics from Johns Hopkins University. Before coming to the US, Mauricio completed his B.A. in Finance and International Affairs from the Universidad Externado de Colombia. He is fluent in Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese. Mauricio has been recipient of scholarships from the University Externado de Colombia and the Fletcher School, Tufts University.
